Rich Crandall\u2019s \u201cBuddy Nowhere\u201d leads listeners through a secretive time corridor to the 1930s in this intimate jazz noir<\/em> solo piano album of re-imagined and subtly shaded melodic fantasies.<\/p>\n

Crandall\u2019s style of playing piano is clearly jazz, but there\u2019s a warmth that pervades his playing\u2014when performing \u201clive\u201d, on his trio albums, his daughter\u2019s vocal albums, and now on his new solo album, \u201cBuddy Nowhere\u201d 1930s<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It began in the Midwest heartland of the U.S.\u2014specifically Chicago where first raised\u2014with the nurturing encouragement of his music-loving, piano playing father, Robert. Maybe \u201cBuddy Nowhere\u201d is a return to musical roots of sorts for Rich, who went on to forge his own jazz path through Wisconsin and Michigan before breaking loose to San Francisco and finally Honolulu. That\u2019s where he settled, married, and passed the musical torch to daughter Angela.<\/p>\n

\u201cClear melodic lines, good time, and rich chords are what communicate best for me,\u201d says Crandall. \u201cPopular appeal\u2019s a trap. Playing in a way that seeks\u2014that reaches out beyond one\u2019s ego\u2014is what\u2019s crucial for musical language to communicate, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crandall adds\u2026\u201cMusic is fantasy\u2014and I believe \u2018Buddy Nowhere\u2019 subtly and concisely captures my own fantasies surrounding these song favorites\u2026from a time period way before my own.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crandall\u2019s albums include \u201cSolo Travel\u201d, trio albums \u201cSoothsayer\u201d, \u201cTil Further Notice\u201d, and \u201cLast Takes with Rory.\u201d He also produced and his trios performed on Angela Crandall\u2019s \u201cShine\u201d and \u201cMalaika.\u201d All were recorded on the Music Formats label\u2014more information available at www.music-formats.com.<\/p>\n
